Coaches have played an important role in my life--particularly athletics coaches while growing up. But I have mixed feelings about my coaches. They had a lot of power and sometimes they used it well. Other times they abused it. I tend to remember the abuses as much as what I learned through them. Overall, I appreciate the discipline and "toughness" tough coaches instilled in me. But the appreciation is marred by moments where they played into their own need for control or were controlled by their anger, both with hurtful actions. Coaching is a powerful tool, but not all exercise it well.
